Living in Kanata

Located west of the Greenbelt, Kanata is a suburban area and is considered as one of the largest communities surrounding central Ottawa. Kanata is a mix of commercial and dense residential properties, coupled with vast amounts of open spaces for people to explore. The suburb is known for being the home of several high-tech companies and was dubbed "Silicone Valley North".

Kanata was mainly an agricultural based location until the 1960s when commercial development took over and modelled buildings that would shape the community. Unlike many other Ottawa suburban areas, Kanata was developed to incorporate a mixture of both residential and commercial developments that would use empty space and create a uniquely designed community.

The housing options in Kanata include townhomes, rentals and single-family homes. In Kanata North, you’ll find one of the oldest areas in the suburb, Beaverbrook, which is home to beautiful parks, community facilities and charming hedge lined homes. Toward the South, you’ll find the subdivisions of Glen Cairn, Emerald Meadows, Katimavik, Hazeldean and Bridlewood.

In Kanata, there is an excellent public transit service, with conveniently located bus stops, as well as major gateways.

In the summer, kids can enjoy a splash pad with fountains and a play structure. Canada Day celebrations, including a fireworks display, are also held here annually.

Within Kanata Lakes, you’ll find the Canadian Tire Centre (formerly Scotiabank Place), home to the Ottawa Senators NHL team and the Bell Sens plex, which includes an indoor soccer field and four ice rinks. Kanata is also home to the largest movie theatre in Ottawa, as well as several premium golf courses. Kanata Centrum is a hub of commercial activity. Here, you can find the Tanger Outlets — a shopping-mall chain featuring a variety of brand-name and designer outlet stores.
